Straightening Back leg on backswing

by Digger
(Sydney, Australia)

What is the result if you straighten your back leg on the takeaway.

Louis Reply

This is an interesting one and often confuses many golfers. The result is any one of the following:

  • the upper body lifts out of the original posture you have at address.

  • You could reverse pivot and shift your weight to the left foot instead of the right foot.

  • A definite loss of power because no coil can be created in the lower body and the upper body.

  • You could top or hit behind the ball if the upper body moves up and down.

You need very little movement in the knees to cause the upper body to lift and ruin the shot. Keep the knee bent and still for as long as possible. It never straightens during the swing. (for a right handed player)
