Practice Swing Differs From Actual Swing

by David
(Greenville, SC)

I can't seem to repeat the actual swing after my
practice swing. I would make 2 good practice swings and then top or shank the actual swing. Please help!

Louis Answer

This is a very common occurrence with many golfers, and there are a number of reasons why this happens.

You mention two results that you are getting, and answers to these can be found on this page shanking and topping the ball.

I trust this will help to solve your problems!

One thing you want to really focus on when taking practice swings is to try to emulate the actual swing and feel of what you intend doing with the actual shot you want to play.

Taking a practice swing that is much slower than the real swing will help with the feel and give you better timing and rhythm when you execute your actual shot.

You may want to also work on your pre-shot routine, and get it more consistent on each shot. Doing the same thing from shot to shot will breed more consistency into your shot making.

Take a look at this page for more information how to develop your routine.

Thanks for the good question.
