Loose right hand at the top

by Geoff

Hi I'm convinced that my left hand grips the club too strongly over powering my fairly loose right hand ...this could be the cause of an occasional shank!

It creeps into my game and destroys my confidence! Any ideas how to stop this problem? (I'm a RH 9 handicap)

Your are correct, it is definitely the loose right hand. Subconsciously, you let go the right hand at the top of the swing causing you to lose control of the club face.

On the way down you re-grip the club throwing it away from your body and the club head approaches the ball from an outside to inside swing path. The reason for letting go is the pressures (grip) are in the wrong fingers.

The only way to fix this is to get your grip pressures in the correct fingers and be conscious of the pressures while you swing the club.

Take note of the left hand finger pressure too as they are very important for holding correctly and will make the world of difference to your ball striking.

Follow in which fingers you need to feel the pressures

Thanks for a great submission!

Your detailed "back to the basics" training has enabled me to improve dramatically in the last week. Just goes to show you how important grip, posture, and stance really are! I encourage anyone and everyone to have a read! Thanks. -Todd

I've been spreading news of your website around to some good friends of mine who shoot in the 80s and they too have found it very helpful. Thanks again! Scott Steele, Kansas City, MO

Just wanted you to know that I copied your grip and setup. Along with hinging the wrists as you instruct, I am striking the ball so much better. Nice and crisp coming off the club. Just wanted to thank you....big difference. Mark, Maryville TN

Great website! One of the best golf instruction sites ever, without a doubt. Thanks a lot. Bob Ashworth Indianapolis, Indiana USA.

I have read many golf instruction books and golf is my first love. Your info is THE BEST PRESENTATION that I have ever read. Your understanding and ability to communicate the information is a gift. All the best, Dr Larry P. Boyle, Jr Texas, USA.

I will be spending more time here, but just on a quick read through I found it to be the clearest articulation of the different elements of golf I've read. The site works well.I like the mix of writing / pictures / video.
