Learn To Draw the Ball

by Gary

How do I hit a draw?

Louis Reply

Drawing the ball gives you more distance and fortunately, there are a couple of ways to play this shot. You will need to experiment with each one of them to find which one suits you best.

To create a draw shot the angle of the club face needs to be closed to the target line and be moving on an inside to outside swing path.

The easiest way to understand and create the inside swing path is to watch a tennis player playing a forearm shot. The racket comes from behind the player and swings outward to the right for a right handed player. This action puts top spin on the ball and a right to left ball spin, similar to what happens in a draw shot in golf.

In all the methods of drawing the ball focus on small adjustments of your body alignment and club face angle at address.

1. Aim the body (hips, shoulders and feet) slightly right of target and make sure your club face is gripped in a closed position (pointing more left than usual). Then make sure you swing in the direction your body is aiming. You will feel the swing to the right of your target.

2. Align the same as as above but use a stronger grip with the left hand (turned more clockwise on the handle). Remember to swing in the direction your body is aiming (right).

3. Align the shoulders, hips and feet to the right with a square club face and rotate the arms and hands to create a closed club face at impact. More for a better player.

4. Set up square to the ball and move the ball back in the feet towards the right foot gripping the club with a closed face at address. More for advanced players.

Once you find one that works for you, practice it at the range till you have a good mental image of what you are doing and feeling.

Here is a great tip to feel and see the correct swing path you need.

Take a tennis racket in your right hand only and grip it with the racket facing slightly downwards (closed).

Now take back swings while in your golf posture and then swing down to impact.

You should see that the racket will be closed and your swing path coming from an inside to outside direction.

This is the best way to visualize and feel an inside to outside swing path needed for a draw shot. Try and recreate the same swing path with a golf club.
