Junior Golf Exercise Question

by Lawrence
(United States)

Hi Louis,

I have a 11 year old son that is a competitive Golfer, and I would like to know of some good exercises that he could do to increase his core strength, maintain his flexibility and help prevent any injuries due to his extensive practice routine.

He is growing very fast and is currently 154 lbs and 5"4". Do you have any suggestions?

Louis Reply

It is always great to hear of young golfers getting into the game at an early age. What a great future lies ahead for them in this wonderful game!

I would suggest he does some cardiovascular exercises like running, cycling, or swimming. Doing either one will help to build stamina.

Pilates exercises for flexibility, and core exercises. They are the safest exercises to do without any concern of injuring yourself and believe me they will give him the strength he needs for the core muscles.

You can read about my personal experience with Pilates and how it works here .

For best results I suggest he starts pilates with a qualified instructor before trying any by himself from the internet or a book.

Lastly, I would suggest he follows a good diet.

The biggest key to his success is going to be developing a discipline to do the exercises regularly, but it may not be easy to get a 11 year old to do this! Good luck.

Why not submit a video of his swing! It would be great to see it and follow his progress!

Thanks for your question.
Regards,
Louis
