Heel Hits on the Clubface

by Louis

I consistently hit the ball towards the heel of the club face, does this mean I am to flat on my swing plane? My irons are built three degrees upright, but it seems something in my swing is happening to where i hit mostly in the heel.

Louis's Reply

If your irons are that upright then you might be standing too close to the ball, causing an outside path of the club head at impact, and a steep swing path into the ball.

Swinging flat from this position would be a definite recipe for heel contact with the club face.

This scenario may also be caused by your weight being too much on the toes (forward) before your take your back swing.

Incorrect ball position (too far forward) can also be the cause of your heel strikes, and is associated with swinging across to the left at impact.

It is important to note that ball position is measured from your heels, not from the toes.

In summary check and do the following:

Check your distance from the ball

Take up your address position using a mirror behind you and check if the butt of the grip is directly below your right arm pit. As a general rule this is how far your hands should be from your fly while in the address position. Not too far and not to close.

Depending how long your arms are, you may need to lift the hands or lower them to find this position I have mentioned.

Secondly, adjust your weight distribution in your feet at address to be more even between the ball and the heel of your foot.

If you want to find this perfect position for you then I suggest taking a look at your posture. and practice the "feels" I have described for a perfectly balanced address position.

Thirdly, check your ball position, move it little further back towards the middle on the stance.
