The Golf Swing Setup is Important as the Swing Itself





The golf swing setup also known as the address position helps with a few things, namely..

Setting up your body to make the correct movements. It is the feeling of being ready to move with total freedom. A Relaxed upper body plays a big role here.

It should give you a feeling of liveliness. The set up position can be related to a swimmer standing on the block ready to spring off.


Get ready to move!

Good golf balance contributes towards power. Feet are shoulder width apart as illustrated with a 5 iron in the picture below.

Alignment, take care always to aim correctly, this can save you many shots.





















The address position is the final part of your set-up routine. During my years as a teaching Professional I found very few students who had a good golf pre-shot routine. They would just stand and hit.

What’s common in good players is the position of there upper body at address. The right shoulder is dropped because of the right hand is lower than the left on the grip. The shoulders and hips should remain parallel to the target line.

Avoid the right hip and shoulder being pulled forwards at address,(because of the right hand grip) a common fault with high handicap golfers. This is a typical slicers setup.



Golf is a game of repetition and we learn through repetition whether it is good or bad!

Most importantly, understand that your address position or set up will be a mirror image of your impact position.

I believe with the help a mirror you will be able to correct any faults that you may have in your golf swing set up. By doing this you can then build the right feelings for a perfect set up.
