Golf Putting Tips to Sharpen Your Skills

Golf putting tips- how to keep the putter head square

Basic putting skill requires a square putter face back and through the ball. More strokes are ruined and putts missed by breaking the wrists during the stroke.

Here is a simple tip to prevent this happening. When you take your grip point the right hand index finger down behind the shaft resting it on the grip. This will prevent the wrists from breaking during the stroke and keep your putter face square.

You can also visualize pointing that extended finger at the hole on completion of the stroke.

Golf putting tips- promoting a smooth stroke

Normally we address a putt with the putter head resting on the grass behind the ball. This has disadvantages, because it has to be lifted up before the back swing is taken, often leading to a jerky stroke.

Rather address the ball holding the putter head weight in your hands but with the putter head barely touching the top of the grass. This gives you the feeling of being in total control and promotes a smoother stroke eliminating any jerkiness.

Golf Putting tips- quote.

”You should focus on the strength of your putts more than the line”

This principle has help me enormously over the years and what I discovered was that your eyes will always take care of the line of the putt. Trust them.

Golf Putting Tips- The action of the ball

One area I find that is neglected in teaching and learning golf is the action of the ball in putting.

Ball contact with the putter face determines how far the ball rolls and keeps its line. The putter needs to be as close to the putting surface as possible during the stroke. Here is a tip that will help you with uphill and down hill putts.

When faced with uphill putts close you putter face by pushing your hands a little more forward towards your target. Make sure that the face is still on target and not pointing left. This will put topspin on the ball producing a much better roll.

With a down hill putt do the reverse, push your hands slightly to the right, opening the face, the ball comes off the face slower giving more control.

Alternatively, you can address the ball on the toe of the putter face and aim to strike the putt off the toe. The ball comes off much softer than out of the sweet spot.

Golf Putting Tips- get back your putting "feel"

It is not uncommon to “lose” your putting stroke. It happens to the best players in the world and amateurs are no exception.

Here is a way that you can get back the magic. Practice putting with your right hand only on the club and then switch and do the same with the left hand only.

This helps to bring back the feel for your stroke in both hands to regain the touch that has been lost. One session on a putting green is often all that is needed.

Much has been written about putting and which is the best way and so on. What stands with all great putters on tour today is belief in being a good putter.

Some of the best putters on tour simply believe they can putt well and they do. It is as simple as that.

Golf Putting Tips- the left wrist

Are your putts missing left and right and you don’t know why?The chances are that the left wrist is bending or breaking down during the through swing.

Focus on keeping the left wrist firm throughout the stroke. It should not bend at all from its original position taken at address.

What helps this feeling is making sure the shoulders are always moving.

When you are under pressure and putting on quick greens it is very easy to move the arms only. Always make sure your movement is from your shoulders.
