Golf Pitching from Heavy Rough
Golf pitching is tough enough from the fairway, let alone from bad lies! The worse the ball lies, the more touch you need to play the shot with some kind of control. A typical situation will be where your ball is lying in heavy rough and you have to pop it out and onto a fast green a few yards away. Ho do you play this shot? How often are you successful? First of all, the ball position needs to be further to the right side of the center of your stance. This will help to swing the club head back steeper on the back swing and come down to the ball at a steeper angle avoiding having to swing through much grass on the way down. Most of us will either swing too hard and send the ball past or over the green, or we will swing too slowly and leave the ball short of the target. We tend to not get the club head through the grass. The key to playing this pitch shot correctly is to hold the club tighter with both hands throughout the swing, and swing slowly and positively through the heavy grass. Your swing speed should only create a lift of the ball and not make it fly out. Do your best to maintain a consistent swing speed back and through the shot. This is the only way you will have any kind of control over playing from heavy rough. Do practice this shot a few times though before you try it out in play.
