The Secret of Golf For Beginners

Being able to repeat the grip, stance, posture and balance is the best starting point of golf for beginners.

However, most golfers learn, myself included, from watching our hero’s on television, reading books, and watching them live at tournaments. Take a look at these excellent videos of the swing. Play them as many times as you need.

Tiger Woods

Adam Scott

We become mesmerized by the flow and beautiful rhythm of world-class players. Visualization of these swing movements becomes the blue print in our minds.

While this is a good thing it is only half the picture. We don’t know how to feel the movements, and the basics of the grip, stance, posture, and balance are sadly overlooked.

Having sound grip, stance, posture and balance are the only way to build a feeling for a repeatable golf swing.

Should bad habits creep in this early stage, it will be tougher to change them at a later stage.

Ingrain good habits from the beginning and you will have the confidence to repeat the same swing each time.

Step One- Grip, Stance, posture, and balance a perfect start in golf for beginners

Learning the grip with the perfect grip training aid makes for a great start.

I would suggest visiting a golf shop near you and purchase a golf club preferably a no 7 iron. This is an easy club to learn with. Club length matters a great deal and the following guide should be adhered to.

Average length for a 7 iron measured in inches.

Juniors age 5 to 7 boys and girls 26 inches
8 to 10 years 29.5 inches
11 to 13 years 32.5 inches
14 to 16 years 34.5 inches
14 to 16 girls 33.5 inches
17 to 18 years 36 inches
17 to 18 girls 34.5 inches

Men and ladies can use standard length clubs.

Fit the training grip to the 7 iron and take some time now to learn and understand the grip, stance, posture, balance and alignment.

Practice them till they become second nature.

Pay particular attention to what the “feelings are” in these fundamentals. They will help you to recall what is correct.

Next, you need to be in the correct position at address with the spine tilted to your right side. Here I would strongly suggest using a mirror. It will give you instant visual feed back

The address position helps you to turn your body correctly in the backswing, and transfer the weight correctly to the right side. Lefties simply do the opposite.

Being able to perform these fundamentals correctly through “feel” will lay an excellent foundation for you to start from.

I believe a thorough understanding of these basics will make the actual swing easier to perform, and you will progress quicker.

Make sure you thoroughly understand and can perform these basics well before moving on to the next step.

Step Two- Wrist hinge and back swing in golf for beginners

Now it is the time to take a look at hinging of the wrists and the backswing. It is critical to have the hands in the correct position on the grip to perform this move otherwise the hinge will not work properly.

The wrist hinge is where all your power is stored, letting the weight of the club head hinge the wrists for you is the best option.Pay attention to your grip pressure.

A simple check point here is to see that the wrists have gradually hinged to their maximum when the left arm is parallel to the ground. No conscious manipulation by the hands should be felt.

Practice half swings in the back swing only, once you feel the movement a little more naturally, swing through to the left side and experience the same hinge after you would have struck the ball. The right arm is now parallel to the ground.

Understand that the movement created with the hands after impact is a direct result of what happened before in the wrist hinge on the back swing, important for you to understand in golf for beginners.

Here is an example of this movement, my hands are slightly above the parallel point of my left arm in the back swing and the same with my right arm in the through swing.

Practice the whole movement back and forth. You will notice the swing ”feeling” is a back and forth movement and not up and down.

This is promoted from a good weight transfer back and through the ball

Lets talk about body turn.

Step 3-Body Turn

Lower body turn separates the Pro's from the amateurs. You can tell how good a golfer is by watching his lower body movement. This is a critical area in golf for beginners. Learn to do it like the Pro's.

Your posture has everything to do with turning the hips correctly. The hips need a feeling of staying up in the address position and while they turn to the left.

Pushing your butt skywards gives you the feeling of the hips staying up.

Keeping the right knee the same flex from address all the way into the back swing will ensure the correct turn.

You need to use your imagination here and replace your image of this with feelings. My feeling in the back swing is that of sitting down on my right knee with out bending the knee more than I started with at address.

The shoulders will stay up too with this motion. The left shoulder moves across to the right side around the spine without any up or down feel of movement. I want to stress the movement as a back and forth action.

Take a look at these swing drills to improve your body turn

Step 4 Swinging through the ball in golf for beginners

The change from the top of the backswing to impact needs specific attention.Your hips and knees need to work together and move laterally enough to feel the weight move onto the left foot. Here is how one of the greatest players of all time explaining this move.

Ben Hogan- Simple tip on golf for beginners

At the same time the arms drop down and inward. Feel your right elbow come into your hip. The shoulders remain passive.

Any attempt to bring the club down with the shoulders will bring the arms and club way from your body. A devastating move, listen to Mr Hogan.

It is a good idea to repeat the correct down ward move with the hips together with the arms as many times as necessary to groove this feeling.

Swing through to a balanced finish. This encourages a good swing tempo and keeps the arms and shoulders relaxed.

A good idea while you are learning the swing is to get a putter and start putting.

This is a lot easier to grasp than the swing but also needs practice. Most of the time you will have to deal with getting the distance correct on your putts, and building a feel memory will take practice.
