The Importance of the Golf Follow Through

The golf follow through should carry you to a balanced finish position.

Most golfers find this difficult to accomplish because their club head speed has been dissipated before impact.

Too much speed has been generated too early in the downswing and this leads to hitting at the ball instead of through it.

The arms, hands and club position pictured here have released the energy stored in the wrist hinge created in the back swing. The result of a gradual build up of club head speed in the back swing and an unhurried swing back to impact.

This action forces the swing to stay at a good tempo during the whole swing, helping you to swing to a finish position.

We need to have a relaxed upper body, with the arms together, proper wrist hinge in the back swing, and good weight transfer to execute a well balanced finish position.

Here is how you can develop a feel for it.

Stand in your address position, turn the hips and push the arms forwards till you are in the finish position pictured here.

Stay in balance for a few moments. Keep repeating till you build the feeling of body fully turned to target and weight on the left foot. Relax while in the finish position.

Now take some slow full swings and only feel acceleration of the club from impact, this action forces you to swing through to a full balanced finish.

By repeating a few times you will be improving your timing and tempo and feeling club head acceleration at the correct place in your swing, namely, at impact and beyond.
