Proven Golf Chipping Tips to lower your score

These golf chipping tips have often been overlooked by golfers and can be of great value.

Chipping with a few different clubs namely, 7,8,9 iron, pitching wedge and sand wedge will give you more options to choose from any situation you may be faced with.

Here is a great tip that will help you be successful with all these clubs. Grip the 7,8, and 9 iron the same length as you would the pitching and sand wedge.

This effectively gives you 5 clubs to choose from for various situations. By holding them all the same length, you control your feel much better for the shot, and you have more chance of being successful.

Golf chipping tips- how to play the delicate chip shot

Typical situations where you will need to play a delicate chip shot is when you are off the green but close to the hole, or you are faced with a tricky down hill chip, or where there is very little green to work with between you and the hole.

This shot is difficult to play softly but try setting up to the ball as though you were going to putt. Use your putter grip, both arms bent and play the shot with your pitching or sand wedge. Weight on the left foot.

You will notice that the ball comes off the club face very softly and lands softly. What experienced was that you can play the shot much easier this way than with the normal chipping set up.

Golf Chipping Tips- building consistency

The best way to build consistency into your chipping is to follow through the same length as you back swing. It gives a sense of timing and rhythm to the stroke and your chances of good club ball contact are increased. This is essential for consistency.

Golf Chipping Tips- eyes over the ball

Much like we want our eyes over the ball in putting, having then over the ball in chipping is just as important.

A lot of pro am partners I have played with stand too far from the ball when they chip. And their results are very erratic. Stand close enough to allow the hands to pass by your legs. This way you will be able to have your eyes over the ball helping you to chip with much more accuracy.

Golf Chipping Tips- the uphill chip shot

Here is another area I see many golfers fall short, excuse the pun!

When you are faced with a long chip shot and the green is uphill to the hole always choose a club with less loft. This applies only if you cannot putt the ball.

It is a lot easier to run the shot up to the hole than use a lofted club like the p/wedge or sand wedge. Use a 7 iron and watch your scores drop!

Golf Chipping Tips- sloping greens

Making sure you survey the slopes on the green is vital for any chance of getting the ball close to the hole. This is where your imagination has to go to work.

By doing this you will be able to visualize the correct path the ball will take to the hole. Check for side slopes and down and uphill slopes that will affect the balls behaviour.

Sometimes your strength will only need to be enough to get the ball half way all the way or only a quarter of the way to the hole. Sometimes you may need to allow for the slope to help you.

A run up shot is the best way to make use of these elements to your advantage.
