Understanding how to play the golf chip shot

The definition of the golf chip shot is where the ball has less airtime and more ground time.

It is a short shot played from around the green and should only be played when you cannot putt the ball.

The clubs used on this shot can vary from a 7,8,9 iron, pitching wedge or sand wedge.

Although the shot requires a short swing many golfers struggle with this shot, failing to realise how you should be set up for the shot.

Here is a good drill that can help you get a feeling for the action of this shot.

Feet are close together, with your weight favouring the left foot.

Hands are opposite the left knee. We are set up with the weight and hands on the left side of the ball.

Setting up in this position will encourage a downward movement of the arms, hands, and club head when you strike the ball. No need to scoop like most golfers do.

With your hands set up in the praying hands position swing them back and through a few times. This will eliminate any feel of scooping up.

This gives you a feeling of the left wrist staying ahead of the clubface all the way back and through the shot.

It is fatal to allow your left wrist to break down during the motion.

Visualizing Distance- when to use which club

Generally speaking, the longer the shot the less loft you should use and the shorter the shot the more lofted the club.

Remember the basic rule of keeping the ball as low to the ground as possible.

Practice, practice, practice and you will save lots of shots.
