Learn the Three Feelings in the Golf Backswing

The three feelings in the golf backswing are the wrist hinge, the body turn, and the weight transfer. They all take place simulaneously.

You can blend these moves into you backswing very quickly by focusing on one at a time.

The Wrist Hinge

The grip needs to be correct in order for the right wrist hinge to work properly. If you are not sure go to the golf grip here.

Here you will see the position of the right hand grip and how it hinges back onto the forearm. This is achieved by blending it into the takeaway.

The movement feels together with the takeaway and hinging at the same time. No jerkiness should be felt.

Half way into the backswing the wrists will be fully hinged. Power has been stored for the onslaught at impact.

My experience with teaching has taught me that an early wrist hinge is better for controlling the length
of the back swing. It also multiplies your club head speed by 7 times.

This early hinging eliminates over swinging, floppiness at the top, very common problems in golfers.

The Body Turn

In the golf backswing the body turn can best be described as a pivot around the right hip.

I teach my students a simple exercise to accomplish a good turn by pushing the arms gently together when taking the backswing.

This automatically helps to turn the upper body to the right side. The lower body gets pulled along by the upper body.

Please note the hip does not move sideways at all. It moves backwards behind you.

An early wrist hinge and the arms staying together will give you a controlled backswing length every time.

I encourage you to practice this move till it becomes second nature.

Weight Transfer

The weight moves to inside the right heel.

Your right knee stays bent all the way to the top of the backswing.

There is a feeling of sitting down on it all the way to the top of the swing.

This gives you two advantages, firstly you keep
your posture position the same throughout your backswing and secondly, a bent right knee allows your body to turn and transfer your weight easily to the right,
and back to the left side.

The right hip feels like it turns behind you pushing the weight into the inside of the right heel.

The arms and upper body are relaxed during
the backswing.
